Out of the Blue

Isle of Wight performance, Brighton Festival, May 1998

Costume by Liz Whitehead Photo by Roger Bamber

In one of my earliest performances in the UK, I was asked by fellow artist Liz Whitehead (now director of Fabrica Gallery) to perform for the Brighton Festival as the Isle of Wight. Her beautiful costume, made from parachute silk, was laid on the grass at Queen’s Park in the shape of the island whilst I performed. Part anchored, I incarnated the island dear to Queen Victoria, probably the only time I was a geographic landmark. This is a rehearsal photo taken by Roger Bamber on Brighton beach, featured in the Guardian.
